Most of us have grown up with one sentence chiseled into our heads above the kitchen: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Because it is manifested in classrooms, through discussions with parents and via health guides and, last but not least, supposedly via studies, we force more or rather less &#8220;healthy&#8221; food into our bodies early in the morning, and especially into our children&#8217;s bodies, just to be fit for the day, because getting up early already costs enough energy.<\/p>\n<p>Spoiler: What if we follow a social dogma that is neither biologically sound nor scientifically proven, and that <strong>forces<\/strong> millions of children and adolescents <strong>against their inner rhythm every day<\/strong>, with far-reaching consequences?<\/p>\n<p>I can see how the first people&#8217;s hats are already slipping slightly vertically, but &#8230; &#8220;let&#8217;s break it down&#8221;, as the AI often puts it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-45ae2d5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"45ae2d5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b8c306 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3b8c306\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The study situation: Breakfast is good - or ... ?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39a47b5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"39a47b5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-00568d7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"00568d7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Incidentally, the dogma mentioned at the beginning does not originate from science at all, but from the industry of the early post-war years. &#8220;Cornflakes&#8221; and &#8220;ham and egg&#8221; were positioned on the market accordingly by PR pioneer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geo.de\/wissen\/weltgeschichte\/edward-bernays-und-seine-verblueffenden-pr-tricks-34354568.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Bernays<\/a> (<strong>(recommendation<\/strong>: ARTE documentary<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/publicrelationsmanipulationdermassedokuartehd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;The science of opinion making<\/a>&#8221; on Edward Bernays)), flanked by manipulated studies and recommendations from doctors. Science followed marketing and not the other way around.  <\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, even today numerous studies seem to come to a clear conclusion:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Children who eat breakfast perform better in cognitive tests.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>School grades are better on average for breakfast eaters.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Skipping breakfast correlates with obesity and unhealthy eating habits.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At first glance:  <strong>Breakfast = healthy. Renunciation = risky,  <\/strong><strong>although the scientific consensus today is that cornflakes, ham and eggs in the morning are certainly no longer on the mandatory list of recommendations.  <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, if you take a closer look at the study situation, question marks arise, because the conclusion &#8220;breakfast = must-have&#8221; is <strong>based on shaky foundations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, and I would like to be corrected, it is based on an error in reasoning that is reflected in an incorrect study design. It is clear that the pupils then compensate for this lack with sweets, which are not classified as a &#8220;meal&#8221; but as snacks and therefore as a negative consequence of not having breakfast. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2c8438b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"2c8438b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5c32d86 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5c32d86\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Biologically speaking: Breakfast \u2260 \"first meal\"<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6899555 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"6899555\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-76a84f7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"76a84f7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Conventional medicine and nutritional research talk in general terms about &#8220;breakfast&#8221; &#8211; and usually mean a meal <strong>early in the morning<\/strong>, often between 6:30 and 8:00 a.m., especially when we are talking about schoolchildren.<br>This ignores a key variable: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wieden.com\/en\/what-is-a-chronotype\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>chronotype<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b74eb1b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"b74eb1b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95e415d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"95e415d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Early risers (larks)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cortisol peaks early in the morning<\/li>\n<li>High activity directly after getting up<\/li>\n<li>Hunger in the morning is natural<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p><strong>Late types (owls)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Biologically only &#8220;awake&#8221; from 9-10 am<\/li>\n<li>Digestion not yet active<\/li>\n<li>Eating early in the morning (e.g. after an alarm clock) leads to sluggishness, nausea or glucose spikes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e60e162 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"e60e162\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-225ebc9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"225ebc9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The point is that most pupils become 1-2.5 hours later in the course of puberty until adolescence (approx. 20 years), which means that their biological sleep window shifts by this time into the morning. This has less effect on extremely early types of children than on normal or late types. And yet the system forces all children &#8211; regardless of whether they are larks or owls &#8211; to have <strong>the same school and therefore meal times, such as the first meal of the day<\/strong>. Biological madness.   <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af2db4d e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"af2db4d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bbdb2e0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"bbdb2e0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">But what does the data tell us in detail?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c3002e e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"9c3002e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dc56df1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dc56df1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Studies, e.g. based on the US NHANES data, show:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Children who skip breakfast consume fewer calories per day on average<\/li>\n<li>The total energy intake is reduced, but often not replaced by structured meals &#8211; but by snacks<\/li>\n<li>Lower nutritional quality: less fiber, proteins, vitamins &#8211; more sugar and fat<\/li>\n<li>Many children who &#8220;don&#8217;t eat breakfast&#8221; effectively <strong>only get two proper meals a day instead of 3.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48af5e3 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"48af5e3\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c44d548 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c44d548\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>But here&#8217;s the catch:<br><strong>These studies generally do not make comparisons:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>&#8220;What effect does a first meal at 10:00 a.m. (instead of 7:00 a.m.) have on daily performance and health &#8211; with an otherwise identical diet?&#8221;<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, such a study would be necessary to <strong>isolate the effect of the time of day &#8211; and thus the internal clock<\/strong>. However, most designs completely ignore this variable. If you&#8217;re not hungry, don&#8217;t force yourself to eat, but develop a healthy understanding of your biological rhythm. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Allow individual meal times<\/strong><br>\u2192 Canteens and breakfast offers not only &#8220;early&#8221;, but also at 9:30\/10:00, for example.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Education instead of dogma<\/strong><br>\u2192 Parents should understand that &#8220;not eating breakfast&#8221; is not necessarily bad &#8211; if the first meal is conscious and of high quality.
